Out with the R7/280 setup, I had about an hour to see how well the setup would work with the 1.4X added before yet another inch of rain fell.
Target-wise, it appears to take a back seat to the 180/2X on very fine details. But it appeared to do okay on bird feathers, even in less than ideal light. It’ll be interesting to see how close the RF 100-400mm can come to this combo, as both focal length and aperture shot are the same.
A bit of progress may have been made with the flare issue. If so, it points to me. It has to do with spot metering and failing to keep the spot steady on the subject. Whether that’s the cause or not will depend on a sustained period of bright outdoor light, which is not in the forecast for the next week. No wonder a couple of my little friends looked so sour today . . .
