Getting there . . .

Out with the SL2-S and 180mm/2X combo this afternoon, I had a chance to shoot some well-known targets. The resulting images affirmed my first impression that this teleconverter is a bit better than other copies I’ve owned.

There was no veiling flare whatsoever wide open, though contrast detail does improve down a stop. And even wide open, the combo captures fine details that 600mm of some other brands might not see as clearly–no doubt in part owed to the clean rendering of the sensor.

The difference in the 2X is enough to cause me to start having thoughts again about another copy of the 280mm f/4 APO. Fortunately the market is a bit too high on that lens right now, and hopefully I’ll be over this little episode of G.A.S. before it comes down . . .
