Goodbye, TCs . . .

With the advent of high-MP sensors that produce great image texture even at middling ISO levels, the concept of “crop to zoom” has become more practical than ever before.

Teleconverters, to me, have long been a necessary evil, fiddly in the field, crippling shutter speed under canopy or cloud cover; but with the reach often making the difference between a deleted file and a kept one. I’ve used them for almost as long as I’ve been shooting.

But my last two got trundled off today. I feel sort of liberated, as I no longer have even the option of wasting time in the field fiddling with a TC.

So from now on, it’s crop to zoom. That is, after I’m done zooming to zoom!
