Sometimes images go beyond “see, click, and post.” The photo below is one of those.
Referred to by me as the “chicken lady,” I have been enjoying her delicious recipe for the last fifteen years, covid times excepted. During that time, she’s occupied roughly the same space on the busy street frequented by both locals and tourists.
If she understood my rusty spoken Thai and I understood her northeastern dialectic response correctly, she’s been cooking chicken in roughly that same spot for nineteen years, surviving blistering heat, torrential downpours, even flooding. Her demeanor toward me has always been totally humorless, no doubt from too many encounters with drunken tourists spilling over from a nearby nightclub area.
All over Bangkok and throughout Thailand, there are thousands upon thousands of people who earn their living this way. But only one—the chicken lady—makes fried chicken this delicous.
